UNESCO-ICHEI held bilateral meetings with UNESCO representatives
From September 2 to 5, 2024, during Digital Learning Week, Prof. LIANG Jiansheng, Executive Deputy Director of the International Centre for Higher Education Innovation under the auspices of UNESCO (UNESCO-ICHEI), along with Ms. BI Xiaohan, Deputy Director of UNESCO-ICHEI, Ms. SU Rui, Chief of the Knowledge Production and Communications Centre, and Mr. JIAO Yanwen, Chief of the Global Partnership and Programme Office, met with key UNESCO officials. Their discussions included meetings with Mr. Sobhi Tawil, Director of Future of Learning and Innovation Team at UNESCO, Mr. MIAO Fengchun, Chief of the Unit for Technology and AI in Education at UNESCO, Mr. Francesc Pedro, Director of the UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (UNESCO-IESALC), and Mr. Borhene Chakroun, Director of Division for Policies and Lifelong Learning Systems at UNESCO. Multilateral in-depth discussions were held on the IIOE Micro-Certification Project for Higher Education Workforce Digital Competency Building, AI Competency Framework for Higher Education, and Regional High-Level Policy Dialogue.
Meeting with the Representatives of Future of Learning and Innovation Team at UNESCO
On September 4, the delegation from UNESCO-ICHEI met with Mr. Sobhi Tawil, Director of Future of Learning and Innovation Team at UNESCO, and Mr. MIAO Fengchun, Chief of the Unit for Technology and AI in Education at UNESCO. Both sides held in-depth discussions on ongoing projects, directions for future work, and ways to deepen collaboration. Mr. Sobhi Tawil introduced UNESCO Global Education Network under the administration of Future of Learning and Innovation Teams, highlighting its relevance to higher education and its influence, as well as its focus on strengthening higher education research and AI competency framework in the future. He further said that Future of Learning and Innovation Team at UNESCO and UNESCO-ICHEI can combine their efforts, working together towards empowering future higher education and advancing higher education research, particularly in the area of constructing higher education competency framework and related training, where joint regional and stakeholder consultation can be carried out to promote the development and localization of AI competency framework for higher education through collaboration network.

Meeting with the UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (UNESCO-IESALC)
On the afternoon of September 2, Paris time, the UNESCO-ICHEI delegation held a bilateral meeting with representatives from UNESCO-IESALC. Mr. Francesc Pedro, Director of UNESCO-IESALC, and Ms. Arianna Valentini, Education Project Manager, participated in the meeting. Both parties exchanged views on the sub-regional research report on Latin America, AI competency framework in higher education, and high-level policy dialogue in the Latin American region. Mr. Francesc Pedro praised the collaborative research report Transforming the Digital Landscape of Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean and suggested organizing a series of workshops around its formal release, as well as convening joint high-level policy dialogue in the future. Additionally, both sides thoroughly discussed and reached a consensus about the upcoming project of the AI competency framework for higher education with UNESCO headquarters, and expressed hopes that under the framework of UNESCO headquarters, the three parties can identify suitable timing and institutions across different regions, fully connect local experts towards promoting the construction and consultation of regional AI competency framework.

Meeting with the Representatives of the Division for Policies and Lifelong Learning Systems at UNESCO
On the afternoon of September 5, Paris time, the UNESCO-ICHEI delegation visited Mr. Borhene Chakroun, Director of the Division for Policies and Lifelong Learning Systems at UNESCO, and held a bilateral meeting with his team. Both parties engaged in in-depth discussions on key projects currently being implemented by UNESCO-ICHEI and explored opportunities for future collaboration. Mr. Roy Saurabh, Senior Project Officer for AI Research at UNESCO, and Ms. LIU Yufeng, Senior Programme Specialist in the Section for Higher Education at UNESCO, also participated in the meeting. Mr. Borhene Chakroun expressed particular interest in the IIOE platform and resources, as well as his intent to incorporate the IIOE Micro-Certification Project and IIOE platform into UNESCO’s teacher development resource library.

Future of Learning and Innovation Team, UNESCO Education Sector The Future of Learning and Innovation Team is one of the entities of UNESCO Education Sector. Under the overall authority of the Assistant Director-General for Education and the direct supervision of the Director of the Future of Learning and Innovation team, it serves as a think tank to reimagine education and leverage knowledge for just and sustainable futures. It comprises three strands of work: education research and foresight, technologies and learning, and knowledge and innovation. UNESCO-IESALC The UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (IESALC) is the specialized institute of the United Nations system with the mission to contribute to the improvement of higher education in member States.
