University of Nairobi

The University of Nairobi is the largest university in Kenya and was for a long time the country’s only institution of higher education. Founded in 1956, it was initially a branch of the University of London and the University of East Africa. In 1970, the University of East Africa was split into three independent universities: the University of Nairobi in Kenya, Makerere University in Uganda, and the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. The University of Nairobi then became Kenya’s independent national university. Located in the capital city of Nairobi, the university has 10 campuses, 35 colleges, and offers 540 academic programs. It enrolls 84,000 students and employs 2,220 academic staff with doctoral degrees, including 450 professors. The administrative and technical staff number 5,525. The university maintains 1,350 international collaborations, hosts 800 exchange students, awards over 500 scholarships, and has more than 240,000 alumni.
