IIOE Global Webinar on Equity and Inclusion in Higher Education
On 22 March 2023, IIOE hosted a webinar themedEquity and Inclusion in Higher Educationwith the Global Education Monitoring Report (GEM Report) at UNESCO, an editorially independent report hosted and published by UNESCO since 2002. A total of293higher education professionals from 56 countries and regions registered and 68 attended the meeting. The webinar invites researchers and practitioners across the globe to join discussions on non-state actors in higher education and specific measures to ensure equitable and inclusive participation in the tertiary education sector.
During the keynote session, Ms.Camila Limade Moraes, senior project officer at GEM Report, shared relevant findings and global cases in 2021/2 GEM Report of how tertiary education engages with non-state actors in many aspects, in addition to the discussion of current initiatives from universities working to promote equity and inclusion. By analysing available data and financial modalities, Ms. Lima de Moraes pointed out that as the demand for 'different (religious or cultural-oriented)', 'better (elite institutions)' and 'more (demand absorbing)' tertiary education increases, the growth of non-state provision in education is evident. At the end of the presentation, Ms. Lima de Moraes also provided recommendations for stakeholders to act on equitable and inclusive tertiary education.
The keynote presentation is developed from a 2021/2 GEM Report policy paper titledNon-state actors in tertiary education: a shared vision for quality and affordability, which can be accessed here.
Following the keynote speech, the Webinar invites two experts, Mr. Riche-Mike Wellington from Ghana Commission for UNESCO and Mr. Saad Rahim Zubair from Habib University in Pakistan, to join a panel discussion and respond to keynote findings through national and regional lenses.
The first panelist, Mr. Riche-Mike Wellington, is a Ghanaian technocrat and currently the Chief Programme Specialist at the Ghana Commission for UNESCO. In the discussion, Mr. Wellington introduced key findings elicited from regional publications andpresented several initiatives and programmes in Ghana aimed at ensuring equitable, inclusive, and quality education at the tertiary level. Finally, Mr. Wellington acknowledged the recommendations provided by GEM Report and advocated practical actions such as continual dialogue among different stakeholders.
