ICHEI attended Symposium on Digital Transformation Leading the Change in Higher Education in Jakarta, Indonesia

On June 20, 2023, the Symposia on Digital Transformation Leading the Change in Higher Education and Digital Transformation in Higher Education Strategic Round Table Discussion was convened in Jakarta, Indonesia. The conference was jointly organised by Tsinghua University, XuetangX, ICE Institute, and Universitas Terbuka, focusing on the theme of "Enhancing Higher Education Digital Transformation through the Development of High-Quality Online Courses."


The seminar was held in a blended format, combining both online and in-person participation. It focused on exploring and envisioning the forefront of digitalisation in education, specifically in the context of Chinese and Indonesian universities. The aim was to assess and foresee the development goals, practical outcomes, and future directions of digital transformation in higher education, providing valuable insights for planning the future of educational digitalisation.


During the opening ceremony, speeches were delivered by Mr. SONG Yi, Level I Counsel at the Ministry of Education's Department of Higher Education of the People's Republic of China, Mr. Ilham Nizam, Director-General for Higher Education, Research, and Technology of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of Indonesia, Ms. Paulina Pannen, President of the ICE Institute, Mr. Noah Yarrow, Senior Education Specialist at the World Bank, and Mr. Ojat Darojat, President of Universitas Terbuka. Mr. XUE Feng, Chief of the IIOE Management Centre at UNESCO-ICHEI, attended the event on behalf of the Centre and delivered a keynote presentation on the topic of enhancing teachers' digital education competency.




The seminar delved into the discussions on innovative and developmental aspects of online education platforms, integration of instructional design and educational technology, development and sharing of digital teaching resources, as well as online learning assessment and certification. Representatives from global universities, companies, and international organisations shared their innovative practices in international curriculum development, digital teaching platform development, and micro-certification in education.


During the symposium, Ms. Paulina Pannen, representing the ICE Institute, introduced the multinational curriculum development project carried out in collaboration with XuetangX. Through donations from 36 Chinese universities, a total of 108 online courses were provided to facilitate online learning and credit attainment for students in over 3,000 Indonesian universities. Ms. Paulina Pannen also expressed gratitude for the online teacher capacity-building courses offered by IIOE, which have benefited numerous Indonesian educators.

Mr. XUE Feng, Chief of the IIOE Management Centre at UNESCO-ICHEI, introduced the latest developments in the IIOE Micro-Certification Project and the framework for digital teaching competency of higher education practitioners, jointly developed by the ICHEI in collaboration with global partner universities and enterprises. These achievements will be officially released on July 4th. The IIOE Micro-Certification Project represents ICHEI's latest exploration in supporting the digital transformation of higher education through the construction and certification of digital capabilities. It will contribute innovatively to the realisation of Sustainable Development Goal 4.


Mr. XUE Feng highlighted the accomplishments of ICHEI in empowering the digital transformation of higher education in developing countries and the global impact of the IIOE as the flagship project of the center. He mentioned that ICHEI had established IIOE National Centers in 9 institutions or organisations in Asia and Africa, covering 49 higher education institutions through these national centers. Currently, over 600 online courses have been deployed, benefiting 12,000 educators in 135 countries and regions, empowering higher education teachers in their instructional practices.

The symposium took place at Universitas Terbuka in Indonesia and brought together over 200 education experts and scholars worldwide for synchronous online and in-person discussions. The aim was to foster intellectual exchange and generate ideas to empower global higher education and achieve the goal of offering worldwide quality education.
